*(Note: this was originally posted in early 2026\. Since that time we have enacted a coup in Venezuela, started a war with Iran, and are accused of meddling in elections in Europe, Canada, and Brazil.* *The far-right network is global.)*

So this is not an apology.

If I could apologize for the actions of our country I would, but I am not in a position of power and it would mean nothing coming from me. If anything, an apology might even be self-serving - just a way for me to minimize the guilt I feel about recent events while doing nothing productive to stop it.

Instead, I want to explain why this is happening.

I want you to understand why America has lost its mind, because a similar thing is coming for nearly every Western country. If you’ve paid attention to the news in the last few years, you may have noticed the [rise of far-right populists](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jun/24/nearly-quarter-votes-europe-now-cast-far-right-parties?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) and authoritarians in most democracies. This is not an accident. It’s a networked movement pushed by some of the world’s richest men and a few rogue states that’s intended to fracture global alliances and upend the current world order.

Ten years ago that may have sounded like an outlandish conspiracy, but now I think it is self-evident. [Elon Musk is dumping millions](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/oct/31/elon-musk-midterms-spending-visualized?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) (billions?) to influence elections in the US and Europe. Other groups are probably paying similar amounts. The [Tenet Media scandal in the US](https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2024/09/tenet-media-closed/?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) (in which prominent right-wing media personalities were revealed to be accepting large sums of money from Moscow for pro-Russian coverage) is just one example of this. [There](https://www.firstpost.com/world/reform-uks-nigel-farage-broke-election-law-to-accept-foreign-funds-shows-investigation-14043159.html?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) [are](https://kyivindependent.com/romanias-pro-russian-ex-presidential-candidate-investigated-for-fraud-media-reports/?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) [many](https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/israel-use-social-media-influencers-support-backfired?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) [more](https://lansinginstitute.org/2025/07/11/the-budapest-loophole-viktor-orbans-corrupt-empire-and-russias-backdoor-into-europe/?ref=lower-case.ghost.io).

As the writer @BrooklynMarie puts it, “[it’s a global far-right power grab.](https://bsky.app/profile/brooklynmarie.bsky.social/post/3kfnq4a76bs27?ref=lower-case.ghost.io)”

She is right.

Some of these guys now have White House press passes

In every situation the gameplan is the same: evoke fears of the other, use racism to stoke internal division, and build a voting block founded on isolationism and hate. This is why we see right-wing media push moral panics about immigrants and trans people; it’s why the current administration has made the creation of federalized lynch mobs its seemingly sole domestic priority; and it’s why we see the efforts to break NATO and the EU. All of this benefits rogue states and billionaires that are looking to expand their borders or spheres of influence.

And this isn’t just my opinion, it’s the exact approach outlined by Russian philosopher and political strategist [Aleksandr Dugin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksandr%5FDugin?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) to subvert democracy in *Foundations of Geopolitics*.

From the Wikipedia entry on **Foundations of Geopolitics*

Unfortunately, these ideas have found particularly fertile ground in the US.

This is partly because America is enormous and most Americans never leave the country and never have their ideas challenged or see the consequences of their actions; it’s partly because [billionaires own every media company](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/deals-ma/what-david-ellison-owns-paramount-warner-bros-cnn-tiktok/?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) and have spent decades building an alternate reality out of conspiracies and hate; and it’s partly because many Americans *are* deeply racist and have jumped to embrace an ideology that seems to validate their racism.

Over time, the combination of these things has led to a cultural movement that is violent, self-righteous, and almost entirely disconnected from reality. People often ask “why don’t Americans see Donald Trump for what he is? Why don’t they understand that this is evil?” and the answer to that is that *it’s been rationalized every step of the way by billionaire-owned media companies that are complicit in his actions*. To the average Republican, Trump is a “genius” that’s playing “5D chess” and “owning the libs.” And to them, that’s all that matters.

At least, that’s what they used to think.

In the first Trump administration, people thought he was wacky and kind of an asshole, but was nonetheless “good on the economy.” They thought that regardless of what he said, there was a moral foundation and structure behind him that would prevent things from getting too out of control. And if some people did get a little nervous, well, that was just Trump Derangement Syndrome. Things were fine. At least, their bank accounts were fine. What was the big deal?

Now things are a little different. In the last year we have threatened to invade Mexico, Canada, Columbia, Cuba, Venezuela, Panama, Iran, Nigeria, Gaza, and most recently… Greenland. [Things are not normal](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/trump-foreign-policy-map-iran-iraq-greenland-venezuela-b2929376.html?ref=lower-case.ghost.io), and even people in the most right-wing belief silos are starting to feel it. I live in a red state, and I’m starting to see ranchers and farmers with anti-Trump stickers on their trucks. This is unprecedented. The first time I saw it I took a picture.

There’s also something to be said about the failure of neoliberal politics and people growing tired of [vacant and inauthentic politicians](https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/6191733-stevens-endorses-rep-mike-rogers/?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) and a system in which nothing changes except to get incrementally worse. People want something *different* and politics of “power” and “strength” are easier to understand than difficult conversations about reform or actually fixing the system.

The irony, of course, is that this political gridlock was created by the same system of corruption and corporate interests that are now aligned with Donald Trump. Billionaires spent years purchasing politicians and tanking any kind of progressive legislation. Now they can just openly bribe the guy that once promised to fix it. *Meet the new boss; same as the old boss.*

You should also understand that much of American Christianity has been hollowed and repurposed into a money-making enterprise that exists to [manufacture consent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacturing%5FConsent?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) for atrocities. People do not self-reflect, because they are Christians. They do not think that they could be wrong, because they are Christians. They do not stop and consider that their religion [might have been hijacked](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/11/business/silicon-valley-christianity.html?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) by [profoundly evil men](https://bsky.app/profile/rightwingwatch.bsky.social/post/3mzgaqkdi2k2c?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) (many of which are now arguing that “[empathy is a sin](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/sin-empathy-christian-trump-vance-b2812330.html?ref=lower-case.ghost.io)” and that [women shouldn’t vote](https://www.npr.org/2026/07/06/nx-s1-5822558/pastor-doug-wilson-interview-pete-hegseth?ref=lower-case.ghost.io)) because, of course, they are innately good. They are Christians.

Flags flown at the January 6th Riot

But even this is starting to change. I have been surprised to see Christians that actually seem to understand the revolutionary underpinnings of their faith and show up at protests in the last year. I’ve also seen local pastors organize and speak out against [Christian Nationalism](https://www.iowapublicradio.org/ipr-news/2026-10-09/the-power-grab-of-christian-nationalist-leaders-beyond-religious-goals?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) and warn others of the dangers of this kind of “false” Christianity. And just [this week](https://newrepublic.com/post/205636/police-arrest-clergy-minnesota-ice-protest?ref=lower-case.ghost.io) (*note: this was written in early 2026*), more than 100 clergy were arrested in Minneapolis for protesting ICE.

Again, this is not an apology.

I am only trying to explain *why* this is happening because the same thing is coming for Europe too. The same people are pushing the same racism, the same isolationism, the same moral panics, and the same hate. Though some details may be different, the ultimate goals are the same - they’re trying to build a terminal quorum of hateful dipshits that’ll withdraw from global alliances so that powerful interests and rogue states can expand their borders and fill those gaps.

If you want to fight it, then make sure that people understand this.

And if you can, keep us in your thoughts. We are trying to fix it.
